Planned Urban Growth to Drive Affordable and Sustainable Housing in Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh Urban Development and Housing Minister Rajesh Dharmani has emphasized that planned urban growth is the foundation for affordable, safe, and environmentally sustainable housing in the state. Considering Himachal’s sensitive hilly terrain, the government is focusing on structured and regulated development to protect natural resources while meeting rising housing demand.
Speaking at a review meeting of the Himachal Pradesh Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Dharmani highlighted that planned development is essential to ensure quality living standards across urban and semi-urban areas. He stated that proper urban planning not only improves housing availability but also ensures long-term infrastructure stability.

RERA’s growing role in protecting homebuyers was also underlined during the meeting. With 269 real estate projects and 159 agents registered, RERA has already resolved 144 out of 194 complaints received so far, strengthening buyer confidence through transparency and digital grievance redressal.
Financially, RERA has deposited ₹1.2 crore into the state treasury and facilitated refunds of nearly ₹7 crore to homebuyers. All hearings are conducted online through WebEx, ensuring faster resolution and easier access for citizens across the state.
Dharmani further noted that mandatory disclosure of project plans, layouts, construction materials, and geo-tagged site images allows authorities to closely monitor construction quality. The proposed Building Safety Council will further reinforce structural safety and accountability, making Himachal’s real estate sector more trustworthy and investor-friendly.
