Chandigarh’s First Bulk Market Set to Launch by October, Awaiting Environmental Nod

Chandigarh is all set to welcome its first planned bulk market by October, marking a major step towards streamlined commercial development in the city. The idea for this market was based on detailed surveys of unorganized markets like Marble Market (Dhanas) and Sarangpur, conducted in 2016 and 2018.

To support small traders and shopkeepers — especially those displaced from the recently demolished furniture market — authorities planned 200 commercial plots. The site includes dedicated space for roads, greenery, parking, and other public utilities. Key infrastructure work like road construction, water supply, drainage systems, streetlights, and a power sub-station has already been assigned to separate contractors.

However, progress is on hold due to a delay in obtaining the mandatory Environment Clearance (EC) from the Ministry of Environment. The first attempt to hire a consultant for the EC failed due to fewer-than- required bids, and the process is being restarted. Plot and booth allotment can only move forward once the clearance is granted.

The project is a joint effort by multiple departments to ensure smooth implementation. Environmental aspects, such as felling of about 350 trees, were handled with due permissions. All plots will be auctioned publicly, with base prices set at official collector rates for fair bidding. The total budget for civil, electrical, and public health works stands at ₹22.26 crore, including contingencies.

Once operational, this bulk market will bring order to Chandigarh’s commercial scene, offering better facilities, transparency in trade, and a model for future urban development.
