The long-pending Tribune Flyover project in Chandigarh is finally on track after receiving in-principle approval from the Union ministry of road transport and highways for its revised cost of ₹240 crore. The 1.6- km flyover, which will pass over the highly congested Tribune Chowk, aims to address daily traffic jams where over 1.43 lakh vehicles pass. Originally proposed in 2019 at a cost of ₹137 crore, the project has seen delays due to multiple revisions and a stay on tree cutting, now resolved.

The flyover will stretch from near the GMCH-32 roundabout to the railway overbridge on Dakshin Marg, significantly easing traffic movement between key roads. Initially planned as a 7-km structure, it was eventually scaled down to 1.6 km by the central government. The Chandigarh UT administration had submitted a revised estimate earlier this year based on new rates, after the high court lifted its stay in May 2024. Following this, the ministry asked for a minor cost cut, which the administration promptly complied with.

Officials now expect formal clearance within a month, after which construction will commence. The project was strongly backed in Parliament by MP Manish Tewari, leading to clarification from Minister Nitin Gadkari about its urgency. The high court, while lifting the stay, criticized the delay and emphasized that Chandigarh had lost a decade due to congestion. Once complete, the flyover will reduce travel time for commuters from Delhi and Dera Bassi and streamline traffic through one of the city’s busiest intersections.
